One of the neat things about the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta is that there is a lot to offer in terms of events. This year (2009), the event started off on Sunday, October 4th with the Round-Up and Weigh-Off, where farmers from all around Maine show up with giant pumpkins to see who has brought in the largest pumpkin of the year. This year saw a new record set by Elroy Morgan and his wife Missy, who grew a 1,210 pound pumpkin.

On Saturday, October 10th, the Pumpkinfest & Regatta also featured some cool events, such as Pumpkin "Chunkin" (where pumpkins are catapulted for distance), a Giant Pumpkin Parade, a Pumpkin Dessert Contest, Underwater Pumpkin Carving, and the "Second Running of the Alewives", which apparently has something to do with the fish alewives and a fundraiser in the area. Unfortunately for those of you coming for the wedding, this will be the day of the wedding if the schedule stays the same for next year; sorry!
On Sunday, October 11th, another slate of events was held. There was a Pumpkin Pancake Breakfast (yum!), more Pumpkin Catapult and Chunk'n, and a Pie Eating Contest. These could be fun events for anybody stick around the area at this time. Then, for people sticking around through Monday, this past Columbus Day featured a 150 foot Pumpkin Drop, where giant pumpkins were raised by a crane and then dropped onto old cars. Again, we weren't in the area for this, but watching the footage on the local news certainly made us wish that we had been!
(Yes, that is a pumpkin about mid-drop. Poor car.)
It's not just the events, however. The entire downtown of Damariscotta gives itself over to the spirit of the festival, and local businesses have giant carved pumpkins in front of their storefronts for people to photograph.
Even as a native Mainer, I had never really been to Damariscotta or the surrounding area until our wedding venue search brought us to Clark's Cove Farm in Walpole. Through complete blind luck, we've just so happened to get our dream venue on the same weekend as a huge and entertaining festival in the area. Of course, this does mean that traffic gets backed up in downtown Damariscotta, and unless you're coming from the north (and only a handful of you will be) you won't have any choice but to drive through downtown Damariscotta to get to Walpole. This is something you'll want to keep in mind if you're leaving the day of the wedding to get to Clark's Cove Farm, although we do have a year ahead of us to try and figure out alternate routes to possibly avoid the busy sections.

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for coming to the website and leaving such kind words. We will definitely be in touch as the 2010 Damariscotta Pumpkinfest and our wedding draw near!
hey brian...want to volunteer next year for the pumpkinfest ?? the organizing committee begins planning in january, and we could make certain that your "volunteer job" doesn't interfere with your wedding plans... just a thought, in that you write so well, and planning the festival is actually alot of laughs (though frustrating at times !!) ... if you have an interest in participazting, perhaps on the web site, finance committee (??), or publicity committee, or events (though the regatta might conflict with your honeymoon !!)???, please email us !! thank you so much for including the pumpkinfest in your blog !! kathy anderson (kathypaul7@aol.com )
ReplyDeletegood evening katelyn and brian:
ReplyDeleteit's that time again !! the DAMARISCOTTA PUMPKINFEST & REGATTA organizing committee is up and running, with meetings scheduled for the year and imaginations running wild, thinking up new and unusual things to do with pumpkins !! one of those giant gourds might make a great "pumpkin coach" either in the parade, to be held on Saturday, October 9, OR the regatta which will occur on Sunday, October 10, as you begin your new life together !!
brian, would you be interested in volunteering this year in some capacity ? while katelyn is busy with wedding-chores, you might find that pumpkinfest is actually a lot of fun, the committee members are enthusiastic, the meetings are lively, and the festival certainly makes for some fascinating stories to tell !!! our second meeting will be held on march 11 at 4:30 p.m. at skidompha library, and the third will be on April 15, same place/time...
also, we are in need of other volunteers you may know of who have skills in the areas of fork lift and heavy equipment operation for the weigh-off and pumpkin distribution in October, seed collection and preservation, dessert contest organization, publicity, videography and/or photography, solicitation of masters of ceremony and parade grand marshall, administrative and writing of minutes, composition and distribution of the volunteer-grower emails, boat design and building, regatta participants - both paddlers and motorized, pumpkin plant-let distribution at the give-away in may, pumpkin artist solicitation and organization/assignments for downtown pumpkins, children's activities, transportation (shuttle driving/sign making, working with the volunteer transportation chairman, 'big dave' page of lincoln academy), fundraising - both donors and major sponsors as well as local damariscotta business sponsors, coordination of non-profit kiosks at the "InfoZone" during columbus day weekend, etc. ... if you are interested in participating again in any of these fun activities, please join us when you can and let me know if any of the volunteer jobs sound interesting to you ! looking forward to hearing from you !! kathypaul7@aol.com
